Alternative water forms approximately 40% of Adelaide’s reticulated water use.

Use of groundwater, treated effluent and treated stormwater, including from schemes using managed aquifer recharge (MAR), not only provides water at a price that stimulates the economy but also provides benefits such as increased water resilience and reduced pollution of Gulf St Vincent.

Due to variability in the value placed on these benefits by market stakeholders, the alternative water market is complex and strongly influenced by market externalities.

MAR stormwater prices are set by councils and SA Water; groundwater prices are driven by Water Allocation Plans while treated effluent prices are subsidised by sewerage charges and driven by EPA requirements.

The true value of using alternative water is an evolving subject explored in this presentation by WIA member, Craig Flavel, Senior Groundwater Engineer at Water Technology Pty Ltd (Australian Water Environments).
